Europe’s first underwater restaurant, and the largest of its kind in the world, has opened in Norway.
‘Under’, which also means ‘wonder’ in Norwegian is located 5m below the North Atlantic sea off the coast of Lindesnes on the southern tip of Norway and is able to seat 100 guests.
The new restaurant opened on Wednesday for family and friends and is now open for reservations for April this year, with more than 7,000 people having already made bookings. The owner hopes 12,000 people will dine at the restaurant each year.
Designed by Norwegian architecture firm Snoehetta that also created the Opera House in Oslo and the National Sept 11 Memorial Museum in New York, ‘Under’ has a large viewing window so guests can see some of the sea-life while they eat. The menu will feature fish alongside seabirds and wild sheep.
Head chef at the underwater restaurant is Nicolai Ellitsgaard Pederson, who has previously worked at Maltid restaurant in Kristiansand and Henne Kirkeby Kro Michelin-restaurant based in Denmark.
He told website : “One of my ambitions is to increase awareness among Norwegians and the rest of the world, to help them realise what they have and the incredibly beautiful creatures that make their home along the coastline of the southern part of Norway.”
