The number of Japanese restaurants abroad has tripled over the last decade, reaching around 187,000 this year.
According to a recent survey by the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, there has been a 20% increase in Japanese restaurant chains across the globe since 2021.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries further attributes this growth to the rising number of anime fans in Central and South America, as well as the increase in demand and popularity of anime shows such as ‘One Piece’ and ‘Demon Slayer’.
Asia and Europe experienced a growth of 20% in 2021, reaching 122,000 and 16,400, respectively.
This increase is expected to drive the growth of Japan’s agriculture and seafood exports as the country’s culinary influence continues to spread.
China had the highest number of restaurants, with 78,760, followed by the US with 26,040 and South Korea with 18,210.
