Singapore-based food delivery and ride-hailing service Grab has partnered with OpenAI to build and deploy advanced AI solutions to improve the Grab experience for users, partners and employees across Southeast Asia.

The partnership represents OpenAI’s first major collaboration in the region, focusing on the development of AI tools tailored to the needs of Grab users and partners.

The partnership will initially concentrate on three critical areas: enhancing accessibility, improving customer support and refining mapping capabilities.

Grab plans to utilise OpenAI’s text and voice technologies to make its services more accessible, particularly for the visually impaired and elderly, who may find it challenging to use the app’s on-screen interface.

To improve customer support, Grab is exploring the use of AI-powered chatbots capable of better understanding and resolving user issues more efficiently.

Leveraging OpenAI’s vision capabilities, Grab aims to automate and extract higher-quality data from visual images, which will enable quicker updates to GrabMaps, resulting in an enhanced experience for consumers and driver-partners.

The Singapore-based company also intends to pilot ChatGPT Enterprise among select employees.

The initiative is part of a broader strategy to encourage the adoption of AI tools across the company, to increase productivity among its workforce.

Grab chief product officer Philipp Kandal said: “We’ve been a pioneer of AI adoption in the region, and believe that generative AI has a lot of potential to further transform the way we solve problems for our partners and users.

“We’re excited to work with OpenAI as a partner to help accelerate the exploration and use of this technology within Grab. Our goal with any new technology has always been to use it to solve real problems, at scale.

“Equipped with the latest tools, we look forward to building novel and delightful experiences for our customers while improving the way that every Grabber works.”
