India’s Western Railway is set to launch Mumbai’s first open-air restaurant on wheels at Bandra West railway station, aiming to alleviate the long-standing issue of disorganised auto-rickshaw parking, the Hindustan Times has reported.
In early November 2023, a decommissioned railway coach was placed near the Grade-1 heritage Bandra station building, and is set to be converted into a vibrant eatery.
The restaurant will feature seating inside the coach and an outdoor area, with live music performances.
The area outside Bandra station has long suffered from unregulated auto-rickshaw parking and officials believe the initiative will discourage them from occupying space there.
Mumbai Commuters Council president Kailash Verma said: “The scene outside both east and west Bandra stations has been chaotic. Though the station’s revamp has improved things, the autos still create traffic jams. This initiative could bring some much-needed order.”
Adjacent to the Government Railway Police (GRP) station at Bandra West, the restaurant on wheels is expected to rejuvenate the vicinity.

By GlobalDataRecent efforts, including the removal of vendor encroachments, have begun to improve conditions for commuters.
The plan also includes transforming the concourse area outside Platform 1 into an art gallery.
The backdrop for the new restaurant is the recently renovated Bandra station building, which underwent a major restoration.
The refurbishment included repairing woodwork, polishing wooden frameworks, and restoring stone facades and stained-glass windows.
An unused structure has been demolished and an AH Wheeler multipurpose store, pharmacy and ATM block have been relocated to accommodate the new venture.
Although debris from the demolition is still present, Western Railway officials are clearing the site and seeking operators for the restaurant.
Railway officials are optimistic about minimal bureaucratic challenges since the project utilises railway property and does not obstruct passenger movement.
In January 2024, Western inaugurated the Restaurant on Wheels at Andheri railway station.
