The Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington DC, US, has announced its latest addition, the Quill & Crumb café, which opened its doors on 22 November 2024.
Located in the library’s historic Great Hall, the café is part of an extensive $80.5m renovation and will serve customers without requiring timed entry passes or event tickets.
Quill & Crumb offers a variety of lunch options, baked goods, and snacks complemented by a selection of coffees, teas, beers, wine and cocktails.
The café’s design aligns with the library’s recent expansion, which includes the new 12,000ft² Adams Pavilion for exhibitions, repurposing the Great Hall as a social space.
Folger director Farah Karim-Cooper stated: “We are thrilled to be able to offer Quill & Crumb to guests of the Folger and to our neighbours on Capitol Hill as a place for good food and conviviality.
“We hope the café invites visitors to linger and encourages our community to gather at the Folger.”

By GlobalDataThe café operates every Tuesday through Sunday from 11am, mirroring the library’s hours.
Closing times are 6pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Sundays and 9pm on Thursdays to Saturdays.
The café remains open during theatre performance intermissions.
Folger chief financial officer Ruth Taylor Kidd said: “The café has been the missing piece in the story of the new Folger experience.
“Since we reopened the building in June, people have congregated in the Great Hall to work or meet with friends. We love seeing this, and we know the café will enhance how we welcome people to spend time at the Folger.”
Constellation Culinary Group crafted the menu, inspired by Shakespeare’s works and the Folger’s collection.
Menu highlights feature English Waldorf Salad, Salmon Gravlax, a personal picnic assortment, artisan pastries, Cadbury Hot Cocoa, and custom espresso drinks such as Ophelia’s Bloom.
The unique name Quill & Crumb was chosen through a public voting process after the Folger received more than 1,750 name suggestions.
