McDonald’s China has announced the expansion of its innovative smart supply chain project, which aims to revolutionise the domestic restaurant industry with efficiency and traceability.

The announcement was made at the China International Supply Chain Expo in Beijing, marking a significant step forward for the company’s logistics operations, as reported by China Daily.

The One Case, One Code project, now set for a nationwide rollout, integrates advanced technologies from Cainiao and involves key suppliers such as Bimbo and Tyson.

This initiative will incorporate more than 100 supplier factories across the country.

It will also see a unique digital identity being assigned to each product package through radio frequency identification (RFID) and other technologies.

Receiving and inventory-checking efficiency of restaurants has increased by more than 30%, and the entire supply chain would stand to benefit from visible inventory information, allowing for demand and supply planning.

McDonald China chief executive officer Phyllis Cheung was quoted by the media outlet as saying: “The expo offers an excellent platform to deepen exchanges with our supply chain partners, drive innovation and efficiency, and advance sustainable development to better serve our customers with fresh, natural and trusted ingredients.

“The company’s long-term success relies on three pillars that are built on the strong foundation of collaboration among employees, franchisees and suppliers.”

In addition to technological advancements, McDonald’s China is focusing on sustainability and consumer engagement.

The McFarm Calendar, its first cultural and creative product, celebrates green agriculture practices and features stories of farmers involved in the company’s regenerative agriculture plan.

The calendar is limited to 5,000 sets and available via the official app.

McDonald’s China is transforming 20 restaurants in 15 cities into McFarm-themed locations offering immersive experiences related to green agriculture.

The regenerative agriculture plan, launched in 2023 with nine suppliers, has trained almost 5,000 farmers.

Promoting animal welfare is also on the agenda for McDonald’s China.

In June 2024, the company introduced its first cage-free chicken logo.

The chickens are raised in clean, temperature-controlled environments and are allowed more than 1,000 steps daily.

At the expo, McDonald’s showcased a farmer art installation created from recycled paper bags to highlight sustainable practices in cage-free chicken production.

McDonald’s China runs 6,500 restaurants, with 2,000 logistics vehicles supporting its supply chain annually.

In January 2024, McDonald’s China teamed up with Cainiao, the logistics arm of the Alibaba Group, to enhance supply chain efficiency and integrate technologies such as RFID to expedite McDonald’s processes from manufacture to point-of-sale.
