US-based fast-casual restaurant chain Panera Brands has named Paul Carbone as its new CEO with immediate effect.
Carbone has led the company on an interim basis since January 2025, after José Alberto Dueñas stepped down.
Carbone joined the group as its chief financial officer (CFO) in 2023, and has contributed to Panera Bread’s business through enhancements in menu, value and guest experience.
Carbone previously served as CFO at Dunkin’ Brands, SharkNinja and Yeti Coolers, and held the role of chief operating officer at Talbots.
Carbone stated: “There is tremendous opportunity ahead for Panera Brands and I believe that we are on the right path to return Panera to its rightful position as the industry leader in fast casual.
“I look forward to working with the team to execute a strategic multi-year plan focused on building great teams, delivering an exceptional guest experience and driving franchise profitability.”
Panera Brands operates 3,700 company-owned and franchised sites across 11 countries.
The group, which includes the Panera Bread, Caribou Coffee and Einstein Bros brands, has a workforce of 120,000.
Panera Brands board chair Patrick Grismer stated: “Paul’s commitment and significant contributions to Panera over the past two years – coupled with his impressive track record of success with both public and private companies in the industry – demonstrate that he has both the experience and the vision to lead the company through a period of transformation.
“Paul’s tremendous focus on building talented teams who are passionate about delivering exceptional guest experiences and best-in-class franchisee profitability makes him the right person to lead Panera into this next chapter of growth.”
