Stonegate Group has announced that The Castle Grounds, a historic pub located in Coventry, UK, has been reopened following a substantial £109,000 ($140,000) refurbishment.

The overhauled pub, now part of the Craft Union chain, opened its doors again on 15 August 2024, presenting a fresh brand identity and a variety of interior enhancements.

This investment has revitalised the pub with a contemporary look, including new decorations and the addition of a dart board, which joins the existing pool table.

The pub’s beverage selection has also been expanded to include a new array of draught products such as Peroni and Amstel, as well as Old Mout cider.

The transformation into a Craft Union venue has not only upgraded the pub’s facilities but also generated employment opportunities, creating ten additional jobs.

Castle Grounds boasts a rich history, housed in a Victorian-style building originally constructed in the 1720s for a silk merchant.

The building’s legacy includes serving as the Miners Union Club in 1939 and later being converted into a pub by the name of Varsity in the late 1990s. It was in 2016 that the pub was christened with its current name, Castle Grounds.

Castle Grounds pub operator Simon Mitchell said: “I have been looking for an opportunity in Coventry for the past nine months and as soon as I saw Castle Grounds, I knew it was the perfect venue to take on.

“My partner and I are experienced in running pubs that have a focus on live sports, entertainment and a strong late-night offering and can’t wait to implement this at the Castle Grounds and make it a must-visit venue in Coventry.

“Craft Union pubs are all about community and we can’t wait to get to know our locals and start up some charity events and fundraisers for our community to get involved with.”

In June 2024, Stonegate Group announced the opening of late-night pub Yates Cardiff as a Craft Union venue, following a £60,000 refurbishment.
