Chef Daisuke Shimoyama is set to open his latest culinary venture, Kokin, next month in Stratford, London, UK.

The Japanese restaurant will begin service on 1 May on the seventh floor of the Stratford hotel, part of Marriott’s Autograph Collection.

Known for his omakase restaurant, Hannah, Shimoyama aims to bring a new dining experience with Kokin, which takes its name from the Japanese term for “past and present”.

The 140-cover location will feature a menu inspired by Shimoyama’s childhood in the mountainous region of Gunma, Japan, with a distinct focus on woodfire cooking.

The restaurant’s offerings will incorporate the aromas of cherry and apple wood, complemented by Binchotan charcoal.

Dishes are set to include woodfire and charcoal-grilled turbot with Kyoto white miso, akami and otoro.

Kokin will also offer omakase, with special evenings dedicated to sustainable bluefin tuna, sourced from fisherman Hajime Tanaka. Provisions Wine & Cheese will curate the drinks.

With Kokin, Shimoyama brings a fresh concept to the Stratford area, blending traditional Japanese flavours with contemporary techniques.

The venue will be located in the space previously occupied by Allegra, which was launched in 2019 by chef Patrick Powell. Allegra was closed in August 2024 after five years in operation.

In July 2024, Powell revealed plans to step away from the Midland Grand Dining Room, as well as Allegra, marking the conclusion of his seven-year collaboration with developer and hotelier Harry Handelsman, according to the Evening Standard.

Powell’s departure was aimed at pursuing new ventures that better reflect his long-term culinary goals.
