Donatos Pizza has announced the closure of its East 38th Street location in Erie, Pennsylvania, US, now scheduled for 9 September 2024.

The location, opened by Christina Vogel during the Covid-19 pandemic in December 2020, is situated in a space that was formerly Burhenn’s Pharmacy and accommodates 58 customers, according to a GoErie report.

Despite the success of takeout and delivery services, in-house dining at the location has seen fewer customers and the decision to close has been made. The lease is also set to expire at the end of 2024, influencing the timing of the closure.

The closure date aligns with the return of some employees to school, allowing for a smoother transition of the remaining staff to the other Donatos establishments.

Vogel owns three Donatos locations in the Erie area, including 1535 W Eighth Street and 4829 Buffalo Road in Harborcreek Township.

During discussions with Donatos’ corporate office, Vogel successfully advocated for maintaining the delivery service area.

The East 38th Street location’s delivery zone will be divided between the two remaining locations, ensuring continued service for customers in the area.

Vogel was quoted by the news agency as saying: “Shortly after we opened, the state shut down restaurants because of Covid until Memorial Day. We could do the drive-through pickup window and delivery, but no one could eat inside.

“That location has the biggest dine-in area of the three, but it just never took off. Basically that means keeping the same number of delivery drivers, about 10. Overall, I have about 35 employees. I only expect to lose one or two during this process.”

In July 2024, Donatos Pizza expanded its menu with the addition of a new item – the Calzato.
