Multinational food company Nestlé has signed up to become one of 400 core partners in the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s New Plastics Economy Global Commitment.
The initiative aims to bring key stakeholders together to change the future of plastics starting with plastic packaging, with core partners working to ensure it does not end up as waste.
Nestlé and Walmart have joined nine other leading businesses including Unilever, PepsiCo and the Coca Cola Company with the aim of targeting the plastic waste and pollution issue around the world.
The global commitment has three main objectives: eliminating all problematic and unnecessary plastic products, innovating plastics to make sure they are reusable, recyclable or compostable and recycling used plastic products to keep them out of the environment.
Nestlé Global head of sustainable packaging Veronique Cremades-Mathis said: “Collaboration and collective action are critical to achieving system-wide change to the way we think about and engage with plastics. At Nestle, we don’t want any of our packaging, including plastics to become waste or pollution. The New Plastics Economy initiative represents an important catalyst on the journey to achieving a circular economy for plastics and we are pleased to be able to contribute to this work through our expanded role as a Core Partner.
Nestlé is also part of the UK Plastics Pact pledge, committing to making all of its packaging recyclable or reusable by 2025. The company also switched from plastic packaging to paper for its new chocolate milk drink Nesquik and its YES snack bar at the start of 2019 and has started to remove all plastic straws from its products.
