UK pub chain Greene King and the Too Good To Go app have gone into partnership to help reduce food waste from carvery meals across the country.

Launched in the UK in 2016, Too Good To Go saves customers money by offering leftover carvery meals at typically half price, from around £3.29, at the end of the business day. The app allows customers to see a map that shows how many unsold meals are available at pubs, bakeries and cafes near them.

Following a successful trial in 19 of Green King pubs last year, the app will launch in April to coincide with the introduction of spring and summer menus.

Since the trial started, Greene King estimates over 1,000 carvery dinners have been saved from being wasted. It was also the first pub company to pledge to send zero waste to landfill by 2020, starting a scheme last August to remove 30 million plastic straws from use each year.

Greene King’s supply chain director Vance Fairman-Smith said: “Reducing our food waste is a responsibility we take very seriously. We have been working hard on our pledge to send zero waste to landfill.

“In fact just last year, 12,488 tonnes of food waste was diverted to anaerobic digestion to generate electricity. This is enough electricity to power 11,239 UK homes for a month.

“I am pleased to see how successful our trial has been with Too Good To Go and we are looking forward to more of our carveries being enjoyed at home. It’s a win-win as it offers customers a great value meal while reducing food waste.”

Too Good To Go co-founder Jamie Crummie said: “We are thrilled that Greene King has taken a definitive stand against food waste as our first pub chain on the Too Good To Go app. With over 500 new customers visiting Greene King pubs during the trial alone, our partnership has demonstrated that fighting food waste makes not just environmental sense but good business sense too for any type of food business.”
