In-N-Out Burger has permanently closed its outlet in Oakland, California, US, marking a significant move for the company as it addresses safety concerns for both customers and staff.
The area has experienced a surge in criminal activity, with Oakland police reporting 1,335 incidents since 2019. This figure includes nine robberies, two commercial burglaries, four domestic violence incidents and an alarming 1,174 car break-ins.
This is the first closure of its kind in the fast-food chain’s recent history.
The shuttered restaurant was located near Oakland International Airport and was visited by travellers and fans heading to local baseball games.
The brand first announced its plan to shutter its only Oakland restaurant due to crime concerns earlier this year.
In-N-Out chief operating officer Denny Warnick said in a statement at the time: “[Despite] repeated steps to create safer conditions, our customers and associates are regularly victimised.
“We feel the frequency and severity of the crimes being encountered by our customers and associates leave us no alternative.”
The Oakland location was the chain’s 193rd restaurant and opened in 2005 near Interstate 880 at 8300 Oakport St near Hegenberger Road, a major local thoroughfare.
In December 2023, In-N-Out Burger opened its 400th location in Meridian, Idaho.
Established in 1948 by Harry and Esther Snyder, the restaurant brand now operates across Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Texas and Utah.
