Restaurant company Yum China has announced the opening of its 500th KFC store in China’s global financial city, Shanghai.

The first KFC store in Shanghai opened at the Dongfeng Hotel in 1989. Shanghai again has become the first city in China to reach 500 KFC stores after 34 years.

Yum China CEO Joey Wat said: “We are thrilled to reach this remarkable milestone in Shanghai, which is not only China’s largest consumer market but also home to Yum China’s operating headquarters. Since entering China in 1987, we have been committed to meeting the evolving needs of consumers with great food and delightful dining experience.

“It has been our privilege to serve millions of customers and thousands of communities every day. Looking ahead, we firmly believe there are immense opportunities for us to continue expanding and growing in China.”

To promote positive social change, KFC has teamed up with Shanghai Library to feature a dedicated reading area with a wide collection of books in the latest restaurants.

KFC has also teamed up with Pudong New Area Disabled Persons’ Federation to make the Shanghai location the KFC’s first ‘Angel Restaurant’ in the city. The Angel Restaurants initiative intends to create an inclusive work environment for individuals with special needs.
