KFC has committed to make plastic-based packaging recoverable or reusable by 2025 through its global sustainability initiative.
Under the initiative, the fast food chain will implement sustainable packaging strategy across its restaurants. This includes developing and using sustainable packaging options.
In addition, the company is working with major suppliers and franchisees to identify plastic alternatives for items such as straws, plastic bags, cutlery and lids in each market. It will also focus on market-specific goals to reduce, reuse and recycle.
KFC CEO Tony Lowings said: “As a global brand that operates more than 22,000 restaurants in over 135 countries, KFC is in a position to have a real impact on how the industry approaches waste and packaging management overall.
“With environmental sustainability as a core aspect of how we do business, this commitment represents a public acknowledgment of the obligation we have to address these serious issues.”
KFC plans to support its franchisees by enabling them to define and implement own sustainability agenda to address the needs of local markets and customers.
