Fast-food chain McDonald’s is launching its first fully-vegan meal ‘Veggie Dippers’ in the UK on 2 January 2020.
The Veggie Dippers have been accredited as vegan by The Vegetarian Society and will be available accompanied by vegan chips, drinks and sauces as a Happy Meal.
McDonald’s follows the likes of Greggs that introduced its vegan sausage roll and TGI Fridays adding its ‘bleeding’ vegan burger to its menu at the start of this year.
The fully vegan meal follows the success of McDonald’s vegetarian Happy Meal that launched in the UK earlier this year.
McDonald’s new Veggie Dippers are made from red pepper, rice, sundried tomato pesto and split peas coated in light crispy breadcrumbs. A McDonald’s spokesperson said they will be fried separately from products that contain meat.
McDonald’s UK & Ireland head of food marketing Thomas O’Neill said: “In the last 12 months we’ve seen an 80% uplift in customers ordering vegetarian options at McDonald’s, so it is time for the brand famous for the dippable McNugget to launch a dippable option for our vegetarian, vegan and flexitarian customers. The Veggie Dippers are a delicious addition to our menu and we’re looking forward to seeing what customers made of our first vegan Extra Value Meal and Happy Meal in the New Year.”

By GlobalDataThe new addition to the McDonald’s menu is the latest initiative in the demand for vegan alternatives at the fast-food chain. In May the company added the Big Vegan TS to its menu in Germany, and McDonald’s Sweden added McFalafel, the first vegan Happy Meal option, to its menu in January after the successful launch of the McVegan sandwich in 2017. Last year, following the release of the McVegan burger in 2017, McDonald’s Finland launched the El Veggo burger.
