US-based fast-casual dining chain Panera Bread has announced the appointment of Brian Krause as its new chief development officer.

Krause joined Panera Bread from GoTo Foods, a developer of multi-channel foodservice brands.

Krause brings industry experience in franchise development and sales. At GoTo, his role involved expansion efforts across seven brands, including Auntie Anne’s and Moe’s Southwest Grill.

He will lead strategic growth initiatives, focusing on new store development, franchise sales and real estate.

He officially joined the company on 13 January 2025 and reports directly to interim CEO Paul Carbone

Krause’s earlier experiences include the roles of chief development officer at a multi-brand restaurant company Inspire Brands where he handled Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwiches in the areas of franchising and real estate, and senior vice-president of franchise development at Wyndham Hotels and Resorts.

Paul Carbone said: “Brian brings deep industry expertise in franchise sales and development, and I’m incredibly excited to welcome him to Panera at such a key time of growth.

“With a simplified operating model and a variety of proven cafe formats, Panera is well-positioned to drive both company and franchise growth this year and beyond. As a proven leader and collaborator, Brian is exactly the right person to help accelerate our plan for new unit growth.”

His expertise will be crucial as Panera Bread embarks on a significant phase of innovation and expansion.

The company is set to launch new units through various café concepts, such as a compact format designed to penetrate new markets while maintaining the Panera experience.

The latest example of this concept opened in Monticello, offering a layout that incorporates support for both takeaway orders and dine-in customers.

Brian Krause said: “Panera Bread is an outstanding restaurant concept, and I look forward to working and collaborating with our team members, leadership and franchise partners to bring Panera Bread to more communities across the country”.
