Sodexo Health & Care has secured a significant contract extension with the Royal Stoke University Hospital (RSUH) and Haywood Hospital, continuing a partnership that has spanned more than a decade.
The new ten-year agreement, valued at £38m a year, is part of a Private Finance Initiative (PFI) and encompasses a range of services across both hospital sites.
The University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust, which includes RSUH, and the Midlands Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, which includes Haywood Hospital, have entrusted Sodexo with catering, retail and soft facilities management services.
Sodexo’s on-site team, which includes more than 1,000 personnel, is responsible for domestic services, portering, patient catering, retail, security, the helpdesk, waste, pest control and distribution.
At RSUH, the team also manages reception services and at Haywood Hospital it manages parking
As part of the new contract, Sodexo had recently installed 24/7 Deli, an automated retail solution, at the hospital.

By GlobalDataLaunched in early 2023, it offers 24/7 access to food options for the hospital’s frontline healthcare workers and visitors.
Sodexo’s relationship with the hospitals dates back to 2007. The company also provides hard FM [facilities management] services under a separate PFI contract.
Sodexo UK & Ireland Health & Care CEO Philip Leigh said: “This is a significant milestone in our partnership with Royal Stoke University Hospital and Haywood Hospital.
“As a purpose-led business, we continue to support the trusts with their social value commitments, aligning our ambition to their sustainable development management plan through initiatives such as an energy-saving plan for both hospitals.
“We will continue to seek ways in which we can support both organisations in providing the highest standard of care for the people we jointly serve every year.”
The development follows Sodexo’s securing a contract extension with pharmaceutical leader AstraZeneca last month.
This covers food and facilities management services across five countries in Europe including the UK, Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Norway up to 2028.
The contract with AstraZeneca, which began in 2012, has expanded to include additional sites and services, demonstrating Sodexo’s ongoing growth and innovation within the foodservice and facilities management sectors.
