Cornwall, UK-based burger chain Hub Box has been acquired in a pre-pack sale by South West Restaurants, ensuring the continuation of employment for 300 employees.

Hub Box, which began its journey in 2012 as a Christmas pop-up in a shipping container, faced financial challenges leading to the involvement of business management consultants Interpath Advisory.

In January 2024, Hub Box reported a £1.25m loss and disclosed that it required nearly £500,000 from shareholders to manage through the winter season.

The ten-restaurant chain, with locations including Taunton, Truro and St Ives, sought the guidance of Interpath to consider investment opportunities to sustain and expand its business.

The escalating costs of food, energy and labour led to cash flow difficulties, prompting Interpath to step in as joint administrators on 11 July 2024.

They arranged the sale of the company’s assets to South West Restaurants.

Despite its financial setbacks, the sale ensures that all Hub Box restaurants will remain operational under the existing brand, with the workforce moving to the new owner.

Interpath Advisory head of special situations Sam Birchall, who managed the sale, said: “Hub Box has grown a loyal customer base in the South West but, like many other casual dining operators, has been hit hard in recent years by high-cost inflation.

“We’re pleased to have secured this transaction which safeguards the future of the brand and which, importantly, preserves employment for 300 staff. We wish all at the company the best for the future.”
