US fast-food restaurant company Subway has announced that its global CEO, John Chidsey, will retire at the end of 2024.

Chidsey will be succeeded on an interim basis by Carrie Walsh, Subway’s current president of Europe, Middle East and Africa and former global chief marketing officer (CMO).

Since joining Subway in 2019, Chidsey has played a key role in the brand’s multi-year transformation.

His strategies have revitalised the menu, enhanced customer experience and driven digital innovation.

Under his guidance, Subway has established more than 10,000 future restaurant commitments.

The brand is also set to more than double its new restaurant openings in 2024 compared to 2019.

Chidsey, who served in the leadership role for five years, said: “It has been a privilege to lead Subway through a period of exciting change, and I am so proud of what the team has achieved together.

“I’ve worked closely with Carrie over the past five years, and I’ve witnessed firsthand her deep understanding of what it takes for a global brand to grow and evolve. Combined with her steadfast commitment to Subway and its franchisees, I’m confident Carrie is the right leader to shepherd Subway through this transition as we continue to enhance our position as a leading global restaurant brand.”

During her tenure with Subway, Walsh has significantly impacted the brand’s perception both domestically and globally.

As global chief marketing officer, she was pivotal in re-engaging customers with the brand and reinforcing Subway’s status in the quick service restaurant and sandwich sectors.

Most recently, as president of EMEA, she managed a broad range of operations across 50 countries and territories.

Walsh, who will oversee the continuation of Subway’s growth initiatives, said: “I am honoured to step into the role of interim CEO, continuing to drive key initiatives to help boost franchisee profitability and delight our guests through innovation.

“Through a collaboration with the Subway leadership team, employees and our valued franchisees, we will keep elevating the Subway experience and deliver fresh, quality food to more guests around the globe.”

Chidsey will transition into a consulting role focused on international growth strategies and master franchisee relations, to ensure a smooth handover of responsibilities.

In October 2024, Subway launched a new $6.99 Meal Deal in the US, with value meals available from National Sandwich Day from 3 November through to 26 December.

Subway also revealed its new global restaurant design in November 2024.
