Canadian coffee chain Tim Hortons is set to make its debut in Malaysia in August 2024 through a strategic partnership with Marubeni Growth Capital Asia, a subsidiary of the Japanese conglomerate, the Marubeni Corporation.

The initial launch will see two stores opening in Kuala Lumpur, with ambitions to establish 100 outlets in the Southeast Asian market by the end of 2025.

The collaboration with Marubeni Growth Capital Asia previously facilitated Tim Hortons’ entry into Singapore in November 2023 and is preparing for upcoming store openings in Indonesia.

Tim Hortons’s global presence consists of 5,800 stores, 903 in China and 78 across the Philippines, Thailand, Singapore and South Korea. Its entry into the Korean market took place with a new store in Seoul in December 2023.

Malaysia has become a hotspot for international coffee chains, with many eager to capitalise on the strong consumer demand for out-of-home coffee experiences, as reported by World Coffee Portal.

This trend has seen rapid growth among domestic coffee operators such as ZUS Coffee, Tealive and Gigi Coffee.

Competition in the country is intensifying with the entry of global players such as Luckin Coffee and Ediya Coffee, the largest coffee chains in China and South Korea respectively. They join other recent entrants UK’s EL&N, Café Kitsuné, Indonesia’s Tanamera Coffee and Bacha Coffee from Morocco.

The Malaysian branded coffee shop sector currently consists of 3,400 outlets. Tealive and ZUS Coffee lead with 800 and 495 stores respectively.

Tim Hortons, originally established in 1964 by Canadian ice hockey player Tim Horton as a diner-style restaurant, has since evolved to specialise in doughnuts and coffee.

The chain is now owned by Toronto-based Restaurant Brands International.
