Zomato has unveiled a new group ordering feature within its app, aimed at streamlining the process of ordering food for multiple people.

The feature allows users to collectively add their preferred dishes into a single cart via a shared link, enhancing the convenience of group orders.

Swiggy, Zomato’s competitor in the online food delivery space, recently launched a similar feature, as reported by NDTV.

Zomato’s founder and CEO Deepinder Goyal took to X to announce the rollout of the group ordering feature. “You can now share a link with your friends, and everyone can add to the cart seamlessly, making ordering together faster and easier,” he explained in his post.

The introduction of this feature is designed to eliminate the need to pass a phone around for individuals to select their orders. Rhe service is being introduced in phases. “We’re gradually making it available to all customers. If the feature is available to you, try it for your house party tonight and let us know how it goes,” Goya added.

In another update in July 2024, Zomato introduced a feature that allows users to erase their order history. The Order Delete option was announced by Goyal on his X handle, following a light-hearted interaction with a user who had concerns about his late-night snack orders being discovered by his wife.

Meanwhile, Swiggy, which is preparing for its initial public offering (IPO), has revised its service fee policy to calculate fees based on the gross order value, including goods and services tax and packaging charges, for restaurants outside metro areas, according to a report in The Economic Times. This means Swiggy’s restaurant partners in these areas will see an increase in the commission they pay.

Previously, the commission for restaurants in smaller towns and cities was based on the net value, whereas establishments in larger cities were already charged based on the gross value.

From 14 August 2024, Swiggy has implemented the service fee on the gross order value for each transaction, according to the merchant terms.

“This change is being applied uniformly across the platform to all partners, leading to a slight increase in the service fee payable to Swiggy,” the company communicated in a letter to its restaurant partners.

Around 1,000 restaurants will be impacted by this policy revision.
