US-based automated pizza delivery restaurant Zume Pizza has secured $375m in funding from an undisclosed investor to expand the business.
The company has announced the cash injection in a securities filing to the United States Securities and Exchange Commission.
However, The Wall Street Journal has reported that the funding was offered by SoftBank’s Vision Fund and the Japanese bank has plans to provide Zume with a further $375m.
Established in April 2016, Zume Pizza currently offers pizzas to customers in Atherton, Cupertino, Palo Alto, East Palo Alto, Menlo Park, Mountain View, Stanford, Santa Clara, Sunnyvale and Campbell.
The pizza chain uses robots, manufactured by Sweden-based ABB, to press dough, dispense and spread sauce and lift pizzas in and out of the oven and deliver pizzas to customers.
The company is planning to operate pizza delivery trucks equipped with remote-controlled ovens that use cloud-based technology to make and deliver pizzas while on-the-go.
Zume Pizza offers a range of menu items featuring pizzas and salads such as ‘bacon me crazy’, palak paneer pizza, BBQ chicken ranch, ‘thom be good’, Italian salad, and caeser salad along with a range of drinks and desserts.
In August, SoftBank Group was reportedly in discussions to invest from $500m to $750m in the start-up, according to Bloomberg.
