Burger King India has temporarily removed tomatoes from its wraps and burgers at some of its restaurant outlets due to soaring prices and quality concerns, Reuters has reported.

In recent times the prices of vegetables have more than quadrupled, the latest sign of surging food inflation.

Notices were seen outside at two Burger King India outlets stating: “Even tomatoes need a vacation ... we are unable to add tomatoes to our food.”

With this move, Burger King India has joined the list of restaurant companies that have already stopped serving tomatoes.

Last month, McDonald’s temporarily stopped using tomatoes in its burgers and wraps in some parts of India.

In the same month, Subway also removed tomatoes in its salads and sandwiches at some of its restaurant venues in India citing poor quality.

At a Subway outlet in Delhi Airport, a sign was displayed saying, “Temporary Unavailability of Tomatoes” and the restaurant could not get enough supply that passed its quality checks.

“Hence for the time being we are forced to serve you products without tomatoes. We are working to get the tomato supplies back.”

To manage the supply crisis, the Government of India has started tomato imports from Nepal.
