Tech companies Cali Group, Miso Robotics and PopID are set to open the world's first fully autonomous restaurant, called CaliExpress by Flippy, in late December 2023 in California, US.
Located in Pasadena, CaliExpress by Flippy is equipped with advanced systems in food technology and features fully automated grill and fry stations powered by artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics.
Miso Robotics CEO Rich Hull stated: “AI-powered robotic order-taking and cooking enables the major chains that feed America to substantially improve quality, consistency and speed.
“Miso is proud to partner with Cali Group and PopID to make CaliExpress by Flippy a reality. Flippy has been an incredible success story and now everyone in Southern California can come to take a look — and a taste — for themselves.”
The companies believe that the new restaurant has the potential to transform the workplace for employees and food quality for customers.
CaliExpress by Flippy offers freshly made beef burgers based on a wagyu blend.
The grill robot grinds the beef only after the order is placed by the customer.
Flippy - the robotic fry station - then serves crispy and hot French fries, cooked to exact times.
Customers can view how their food is being cooked robotically via their PopID accounts at self-ordering kiosks.
PopID CEO and Miso Robotics board member John Miller stated: “To our knowledge, this is the world's first operating restaurant where both ordering and every single cooking process are fully automated.
“The marriage of these various technologies to create the most autonomous restaurant in the world is the culmination of years of research, development, and investment in a family of revolutionary companies.”
The companies assert that the new restaurant concept will create a safer, easier and friendlier kitchen for its employees.
Flippy’s robotic frying station should almost eliminate issues such as slippage and burns during cooking, and will also address waste reduction of both food and oil. CaliExpress by Flippy also requires a smaller crew to operate the kitchen.
In May 2023, Miso Robotics collaborated with Ecolab to develop next-generation automation solutions for the foodservice industry.
