British coffee chain Costa Coffee has announced a pay increase for its team members across 1,500 company-owned stores in the UK.

15,000 workers will receive an average salary increase of 9% beginning on 1 April 2024, their seventh pay rise since April 2021.

The company's investment of £15m will elevate the starting hourly wage to £12 from £10.70.

The new rate positions Costa Coffee at 56p per hour above the UK National Living Wage.

Experienced Barista Maestros will receive an average 8% wage increase, with their pay rising to at least £12.33 per hour.

This can increase to £12.83 upon completion of role-specific training.

For team members working in Central London, the standard starting rate will be £13 per hour and £13.33 for new Barista Maestros. The additional £1 per hour reflects the higher cost of living in the capital.

Costa's inclusive pay policy ensures that all UK-based team members, regardless of age, will benefit from the pay hike.

The company will also provide its staff discounts on purchases, up to 10% matching on pension contributions, income protection, life assurance and a cycle-to-work scheme, and will continue to offer complimentary coffee during their shifts.

Costa Coffee UK and Ireland managing director Nick Orrin said: “We are pleased to have had a strong 2023 that was powered by our expert baristas, who remain critical to our ongoing success.

“We are delighted to announce this latest investment in our team members to thank them for the passion and skill they display each and every day.”

This month, Lagardère Travel Retail opened its first Costa Coffee outlet in Belgium at Liège-Guillemins station.
