UK-based foodservice company SSP Group has secured clearance from the French Competition Authority to create a new joint venture (JV), Extime Food & Beverage Paris.

The new JV company will be operated by SSP and Aéroport de Paris (ADP), a Paris-based international airport operator.

Extime Food & Beverage Paris will manage and operate food and beverage outlets at Paris-Charles de Gaulle and Paris-Orly Airports.

SSP France, Belgium and Luxembourg managing director Gerard D’Onofrio said: “We are pleased with the outcome of the High Authority for Competition decision.

“The creation of the joint venture Extime Food & Beverage with Aéroport de Paris represents an important turning point for SSP and for travellers at Paris-Charles de Gaulle and Paris-Orly airports.

“This new entity will allow us to rethink and enrich the catering offer at the airports, offering a high-end and diversified culinary experience that will appeal to the most demanding passengers.”

Last month, SSP Group secured a seven-year contract extension at the London City Airport.

With this new contract, SSP Group will oversee and open new food and beverage (F&B) concepts at the airport.

The contract was awarded to SSP as part of a £12m ($15.3m) upgrade of the airport’s Departure Lounge, which included the refurbishment of the Food and Beverage space. SSP will also launch its brand, Hithes, at the airport.

Hithes’ menu offerings include the ‘City Boys’ all-day breakfast, ‘Notting Hill’ jerk chicken and ‘The Best of Brick Lane’ chicken tikka masala.

Customer engagement drives metaverse investment in the foodservice sector

COVID-19 and supply chain disruptions following the Ukraine war have accelerated automation and digitalization in the foodservice sector. Home delivery services and consumer engagement through digital channels have become essential for businesses trying to stay afloat. Foodservice companies must also cope with ESG issues, the fast-changing world of work, and the global economy heading for recession and possible stagflation. The metaverse, enabled by both AR and VR, is an important tool that can help address many of the foodservice industry's key challenges.
