Food ordering and delivery platform GrubHub has expanded its services with the addition of on-demand delivery.

The new service will allow self-delivery restaurants on the Grubhub Marketplace to request a Grubhub delivery driver to facilitate last-mile logistics.

Grubhub restaurant success vice-president Liz Bosone said: “Whether a restaurant could use extra support to keep up with demand during peak hours or cover for a driver who called in sick, we want to give restaurants even more help to run their business and deliver great experience to customers.

“We’ve heard from our restaurant partners that they welcome the convenience of this feature and like having alternate fulfilment options that don’t require hiring additional staff. We’re proud to add this feature to our suite of tools and services.”

The on-demand delivery service is currently being trialled in Boston, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Washington DC, Seattle, Chicago and Denver.

Restaurants that use this new service will be charged a flat delivery fee of $5 per order.

The new on-demand delivery feature will join other services that Grubhub offers its restaurant partners, including supplemental delivery.

Supplemental delivery allows self-delivery restaurants to expand their delivery boundary and reach more diners.

In June this year, GrubHub extended its partnership with Amazon to provide one-year free Grubhub+ membership to Amazon Prime members in the US.
