More than 1,700 restaurants across Hong Kong are reportedly planning to slash prices by up to 30% to boost sales on National Day, which falls on 1 October 2023.

According to the South China Morning Post, the restaurant industry estimates that the move could boost dine-in sales at night.

The news agency quoted Hong Kong Legislative Council member Tommy Cheung Yu-yan as saying: “We have encouraged restaurants to consider offering discounts in the evening, in addition to morning and afternoon slots.

“We are definitely supporting the government’s drive on the night economy.”

The discounts are anticipated to encourage people to go out over the long weekend, thereby boosting spending.

On National Day, the restaurant chain Maxim’s Hong Kong will be offering a wide range of discounts at its bakeries and fast food chains.

Fast food restaurant chain McDonald’s is also reportedly planning to sell two sweetcorn pies for HK$11.

Institute of Dining Art catering group president Ray Chui Man-wai anticipates that these promotional discounts could result in a 10% to 20% spike in business.

However, he added that the food and beverage industry's recovery from pandemic restrictions has been disappointing.

Chui Man-wai said: “Business has been worse than expected. We had hoped for business to return to the levels of 2018, but we are only at about 80% right now.”
