Japanese sushi chain Kura Sushi plans to open a revolving sushi restaurant with 338 seats at the Osaka-Kansai Expo in Yumeshima, Osaka.

The restaurant, scheduled to open on 13 April 2025, will be located in the Future Society Showcase Zone on the west side of the Expo site.

The restaurant will offer the world's longest conveyor belt, stretching 135m, delivering sushi and other food items directly to customers in their seats.

The design of the restaurant's exterior walls will incorporate sustainability principles, utilising plaster made from 336,000 recycled ark clam shells.

The walls will feature the Kura Sushi design, with an image of tuna sushi.

The interior will reflect a modern Japanese aesthetic, with a white wood base and decorative elements such as Kura Sushi plates on the ceiling.

The restaurant will be equipped with Kura Sushi's standard systems, including "Smart Kura," which allows for a contactless dining experience from entry to exit.

A production control system will assist in managing the quantity of sushi on the lanes based on real-time customer activity.

A water collection system will streamline the process of returning finished plates to the kitchen.

Kura Sushi continues to expand its global presence, with a recent opening in Ginza, Japan.

As of 6 September, the company operated 550 restaurants in Japan, 65 in the US, 57 in Taiwan and three in Shanghai, China.

Kura Sushi advertising and investor relations division public relations director and general manager Hiroyuki Okamoto said: “At the Expo, our stores will be operated under the concept of ‘revolving conveyor belt unites the world'.

“Under this concept, the customers will be able to enjoy representative dishes from each of the countries participating in the Expo, along with popular sushi and side dishes from our restaurants. Despite the many challenges that exist in today’s world, we hope that visitors from all over the world will smile as they enjoy not only sushi but also dishes from around the world from our revolving conveyor belt, which has no beginning and no end.”
