McDonald's Japan has introduced its new Chocolate Sweet Potato Pie as part of its seasonal offerings, alongside the return of the Black Sankaku Choko Pie, Japan Today has reported.

2024 marks the 18th anniversary of the fast-food giant’s Sankaku (Triangle) Choco Pies, and to commemorate, it has introduced a brand-new flavour combination, Sweet Potato and Caramel.

The pastry features a blend of sweet potato cream, chocolate cream and caramel-flavoured corn snack pieces.

Caramel powder is incorporated into the crust's dough, offering a sweet taste that complements the autumn weather.

The Black Sankaku Choko Pie and the Sweet Potato and Caramel Pie are priced at Y160 ($1.07) and Y180 respectively.

In September 2024, burger chains in Japan celebrated the tsukimi or moon-viewing tradition by adding egg-topped burgers and moon-themed sweets to their menus.

Despite appearing to be a standard chocolate pie, the Black Sankaku Choko Pie has crushed almonds in its chocolate cream filling. Its recipe was updated in 2023 to enhance its flavour profile.

McDonald's Japan has released new commercials to promote its seasonal desserts.

The Black Sankaku Choko Pie will be available until late December and the Sweet Potato and Caramel until early November.

In July 2024, McDonald’s Japan expanded its summer menu with the introduction of the Watermelon Frappé and Banana Macaron, available from 31 July to mid-September 2024.
