McDonald's Japan is set to raise prices across 184 city centre branches to cope with the increasing labour and rental costs, Reuters reported.

There are currently 3,000 McDonald's restaurants in the region. According to the news agency, the 184 city centre restaurant outlets equate to 6% of the total count.

McDonald's Holdings Company Japan will implement the new pricing structure from 19 July 2023.

So far, 40 McDonald's outlets located in some city centres and special locations, including airports and motorway service stations, have been subject to “city centre pricing.”

Since March last year, McDonald's Japan is said to have increased prices three times across all its restaurant outlets in the country, including the latest one in January.

The latest price hike could see a price increase of Y10 to Y90 per item or set.

In October 2022, McDonald's Japan said that it would stop the usage of plastic straws and cutlery at nearly 2,900 restaurant locations nationwide.

Instead, it will opt for paper straws and wooden utensils to reduce plastic pollution.

According to Nikkei Asia, the move is expected to help the fast food restaurant brand to cut 900t of plastic usage.
