US-based fast food restaurant chain McDonald's has opened its first restaurant close to a highway in Ukraine, according to a report by Interfax.

Located 127km from the capital city of Kyiv, the new restaurant is situated near the M-06 Kyiv-Chop highway in the Zhytomyr region.

The restaurant occupies an area of more than 500m² and has 113 seats inside and 116 on the terrace. It is claimed to be one of Europe's largest McDonald's outlets.

The restaurant will remain open from 7:30am to 10:00pm to comply with the company's safety regulations.

Interfax quoted McDonald's Ukraine, the Czech Republic and Slovakia general director Yuliya Badritdinova as saying: "Establishments on highways are a part of the development strategy in Ukraine and long-standing practice in the world.

"In this case, we use the location next to an already existing element of infrastructure, namely the WOG gas station, so that the stop is as convenient and efficient as possible."

According to Ukraine Today.org, the restaurant is expected to close during air raid alerts and reopen an hour after it is lifted for safety concerns.

Ukrainian deputy prime minister and Minister for Development of Communities, Territories and Infrastructure Alexander Kubrakov noted that the restaurant's newest location is an important sign for business in the war-torn country.

As of this month, McDonald's has more than 90 outlets in operations across the country.

McDonald's recently unveiled plans to launch the world's first restaurant dedicated to French fries in Sydney, Australia.

The location is part of the company's sponsorship of the FIFA Women's World Cup Australia & New Zealand 2023.

The restaurant is built in the shape of a McDonald's fries packet and will be almost 5m high.
