McDonald's has announced the return of the Shamrock Shake and the OREO Shamrock McFlurry to its US restaurants.

The mint-flavoured options will be available for a limited time, starting from 5 February 2024.

The Shamrock Shake, first introduced in 1970, is a blend of McDonald's creamy vanilla soft serve with mint syrup, finished with a whipped topping.

The OREO Shamrock McFlurry combines the same minty flavour with crushed OREO cookies for added crunch.

The original Shamrock Shake was created in 1967 by a Connecticut McDonald's owner to commemorate St Patrick's Day. Its national debut three years later saw it become an immediate success, establishing it as a seasonal staple.

In 2020, McDonald's expanded the line with the introduction of the McFlurry version. This dessert includes the classic ingredients of the original Shamrock Shake with the addition of crushed OREO cookies, offering a new twist on the minty favourite.

In January 2024, McDonald’s China partnered with Cainiao, the logistics arm of the Alibaba Group, to enhance supply chain efficiency, the South China Morning Post has reported.

The partnership will integrate technologies such as radio frequency identification (RFID) to fast-track McDonald’s processes from manufacture to point-of-sale.

McDonald’s China will use Cainiao’s RFID technology in its supply chain via built-in tags on food packaging which will enable the tracking of products from factories to restaurants.

The initiative is expected to improve inventory management and reduce the time required for stocktaking.

RFID is a third-generation identification technology, following bar codes and QR codes. It operates by transmitting data through radio frequency signals from a microchip within the tag.

In December 2023, McDonald’s announced a strategic expansion with Accenture to integrate generative AI technology across its restaurants worldwide.

The initiative focused on improving operational efficiency, customer service and employees’ digital skills.

The collaboration also focused on leveraging technology to streamline restaurant operations and enhance the dining experience.
