Casual dining restaurant chain TGI Fridays has appointed Weldon Spangler as its new chief executive officer (CEO), effective immediately.

Spangler, who has previously been associated with the brand as a member of its board, succeeds Brandon Coleman III, who was appointed in August 2023 but has resigned for personal reasons.

Coleman had originally joined TGI Fridays as its US president and chief marketing officer in October 2022.

TriArtisan Capital Advisors board chairman and co-founder Rohit Manocha subsequently announced his appointment as CEO. TriArtisan is one of the leading investors in the restaurant chain.

As the company’s new CEO, Spangler will be responsible for leading the implementation of a growth plan which aims to revitalise the brand on a global scale.

Spangler stated: “I thank Rohit and the board for their trust in me and look forward to working closely with the board on executing our new growth-oriented business plan focused on revitalising TGI Fridays.

“We are a well-loved brand around the world, which is a strong foundation on which to build our business and brand.”

700 TGI Fridays restaurants in 51 countries offer American food and drinks.

As the company's active chairman, Rohit Manocha will work directly with Spangler and the TGI Fridays team.

Customer engagement drives metaverse investment in the foodservice sector

COVID-19 and supply chain disruptions following the Ukraine war have accelerated automation and digitalization in the foodservice sector. Home delivery services and consumer engagement through digital channels have become essential for businesses trying to stay afloat. Foodservice companies must also cope with ESG issues, the fast-changing world of work, and the global economy heading for recession and possible stagflation. The metaverse, enabled by both AR and VR, is an important tool that can help address many of the foodservice industry's key challenges.
