A new rail coach restaurant has opened outside Gomti Nagar station in the city of Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, the Hindustan Times has reported.

A decommissioned train coach has been transformed into a 70-seater restaurant called Royal Train Cuisine.

North Eastern Railway Lucknow public relations officer Mahesh Gupta stated: “This is the first-ever coach restaurant of the North Eastern Railway, representing a significant boon not only for locals but also for passengers.

“The restaurant, operating 24 hours, is poised to make a substantial impact, especially once the station is fully inaugurated in the coming months.”

The train coach restaurant also features a handwashing area, a washroom and a well-equipped kitchen.

Royal Train Cuisine owner Abhay Pratap Singh explained that the space outside the coach will also feature a café and a separate cabin for online takeaway orders.

In November 2023, Indian Railways opened its second Rail Coach restaurant at Pune railway station in the state of Maharashtra.

Located near the Divisional Railway Manager’s office, the Rail Coach will be managed by Indian restaurant company Haldirams.

The 100m² restaurant will operate round the clock and can accommodate 40 guests. The Rail Coach also features a takeaway counter for quick service.

A railway official was quoted by the news agency as saying of the new restaurant: “It offers a wide range of products including beverages, chaats, chola bhatura, North Indian, pack sweets and namkeens, pau bhaji, raj kachori, softy, South Indian, traditional Indian sweets, veg thali and combo etc.”

Adoption of robotics in foodservice is at a nascent stage

The role of robotics is less sure-footed in the foodservice sector. Automating kitchens and meal service is less easily done with robots than automating warehouses and production lines, although this hasn’t deterred start-ups’ efforts to automate burger flipping and meal delivery with robots and drones. Robots improve profitability in the long term but have high up-front costs, so investing in robotics is not without risks.
