Singapore-based restaurant The English House, opened by British chef Marco Pierre White in 2018, announced a temporary shutdown on 17 February 2025 after almost seven years of operation.

The restaurant, located at 28 Mohamed Sultan Road, offered a mix of British and international dishes, as reported by CNA Lifestyle.

It announced on Instagram in a post entitled “Adieu Singapore” that it will be closed until further notice, “taking a break to rejuvenate and assess the current economic situation” and that it plans to end its operations on a “positive note”.

It then stated that plans for “a franchise canteen concept” are in the pipeline, to open “pending favourable market conditions and subject to favourable circumstances”.

The restaurant added that it will relocate outside of Singapore while on its break, and that its new concept will include no reservations, self-service, no outside beverages allowed, an age restriction of six years and above, and a pet-friendly environment.

The restaurant continued: “The success of this [franchise canteen] project hinges on our ability to address manpower constraints - a key consideration in the food and beverage sector.”

In November 2024, the restaurant implemented an age limit for diners, banning children under six years old due to “recent experiences”.

During the Covid-19 pandemic years, the brand also introduced a popular S$9.99 “inflation menu”.
