American fast-food chain Sonic is set to launch the Blackout Slush Float drink to celebrate the North American total solar eclipse on 8 April 2024.

The limited-time offering will be available from 25 March, with complimentary solar eclipse viewing glasses provided with each purchase.

The Blackout Slush Float is a visually striking beverage, featuring an all-black slush base flavoured with cotton candy and dragon fruit, symbolising the darkness of the solar eclipse.

The drink is finished with a layer of white soft-serve ice cream and topped with blue and purple galaxy-themed sprinkles.

SONIC culinary and menu vice-president Mackenzie Gibson said: “There are over 400 Sonic locations in areas where the total solar eclipse will be visible, and we thought - what better way to create some fun for our fans as they experience this unique event than by introducing a new treat that’s as awe-inspiring as the eclipse itself?”

Sonic has collaborated with Terry Virts, a former Nasa astronaut and International Space Station commander, to offer expert tips on how to best witness the solar eclipse.

Virts, who has experienced an eclipse from space, noted that the next total solar eclipse visible in North America will not occur until 2044.

The Blackout Slush Float will be available at participating Sonic locations nationwide, with prices varying by location. The promotion will run through to 5 May, subject to availability.

Sonic is also offering a deal on Crispy Tender Wraps from 25 March to 5 May. The wraps come in two flavours: Hickory BBQ and Cheesy Baja, both featuring meat tenders and a variety of sauces and cheeses wrapped in a tortilla.
