US hamburger chain Wendy’s has opened its first Global Next Gen restaurants as well as finalising Global Next Gen High-Capacity Kitchen design to meet high customer demand.

The restaurant brand unveiled its Global Next Gen restaurant design standard less than a year ago, and is now currently open in Kansas and Oklahoma.

Wendy’s plans to open more than 200 such restaurants through 2024.

Featuring sleek and modern design, Global Next Gen restaurants are equipped with next-generation technology that is said to offer convenience, speed and accuracy across drive-thru, dine-in and digital order pick-up.

Wendy's International president and chief development officer Abigail Pringle said: “The Global Next Gen future-forward design unlocks 400-times the capacity for digital orders, accelerating the System's digital growth.

“By bringing Global Next Gen from cutting-edge blueprints to successful openings in less than one year, Wendy's global structure is enabling System-wide expansion optimized to the digital age.”

Wendy’s Next Gen High-Capacity Kitchen is said to have been designed for restaurants with high customer demand and is said to enhance kitchen output capacity by 50% compared with the Global Next Gen standard.

The new kitchen makes use of the Global Next Gen design, with the added benefits of a dual-sided kitchen layout and increased equipment capacity.

It is capable of meeting changing customer preferences including increasing digital order capacity, the company said.

Pringle added: “The new high-capacity kitchen design maximizes kitchen throughput for restaurants with the highest volume using Global Next Gen design innovation as the foundation for success.

“We are excited to harness both design and technology to unlock digital and global growth to meet the demands of our customers today and tomorrow.”

Customer engagement drives metaverse investment in the foodservice sector

COVID-19 and supply chain disruptions following the Ukraine war have accelerated automation and digitalization in the foodservice sector. Home delivery services and consumer engagement through digital channels have become essential for businesses trying to stay afloat. Foodservice companies must also cope with ESG issues, the fast-changing world of work, and the global economy heading for recession and possible stagflation. The metaverse, enabled by both AR and VR, is an important tool that can help address many of the foodservice industry's key challenges.
